About
The Legacy
Thomas Vincent Ramos was not a cyclist. He was a schoolteacher, born in Puerto Cortés in 1887, who moved permanently to Stann Creek Town in 1923 and spent the rest of his life arguing for the Garifuna people of Belize. He was a contemporary of Marcus Garvey and worked within Garvey's movement. In 1941 he founded what is now Garifuna Settlement Day, petitioning for the nineteenth of November to be recognised. The southern districts got the holiday in 1943. The whole country got it in 1977, twenty-two years after he died.
