About
The Legacy
The Classic began in 1928 as an idea rather than a race. Monrad Metzgen, watching a cricket match outside the city, noticed how many Belizeans had ridden out to it on bicycles and reasoned that men who would ride that far for cricket might ride a good deal further for its own sake. On the morning of 5 April a bugle woke Belize City at three o'clock. By five, a crowd put at five thousand had gathered at the Supreme Court to watch the riders circle the building twice and head west.
