Jeffery O'Brien was the finest sprinter of his generation and he won like one. He took the Cross Country in 1951, 1952, 1954 and 1955, settling every one of them on the finish, and in 1954 he set a record of 7 hours 44 minutes that stood for more than twenty years. He was second in 1953, the year of the handicap race.
